Peace, Tolerance, Women, Children and Human Rights

Advocacy with Ulama on Peace and Tolerance in Pakistan is an ongoing project of NRDF which aims to utilize the support of religious clerics in arresting the growing spread of extremism, militancy and terrorism (January 2005 till date).

Sensitization and Capacity Building of Religious Scholars about Bonded Labour was the International Labour Organization (ILO) funded pilot project in six districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa namely Peshawar, Abbot bad, Mansehra, Bannu, Haripur and Batagram. The purpose of the project was to sensitize and enhance the capacity of Ulama regarding issues related to bonded labor; workers and child rights through training workshops, lobbying and consultations (January to April 2009)

Election and Islam in NWFP was the Asia Foundation funded project in which NRDF prepared a booklet on the subject for distribution among its network members and rights based groups to raise awareness on importance of voting, facilitate voters’ registration and promote female voting in the election process. A campaign on TV channel was also run as part of the project (December 2007 till February 2008).

Universal Birth Registration Project:

This project was implemented by NRDF in collaboration with PLAN Pakistan in Swat, Buner, Dir Upper, Dir Lower, Shangla, Kohistan and Malakand Agency. The project showed remarkable results and contributed in giving a big boost to birth registration in the difficult-to-reach selected locations (January to December 2006).

Strengthening Moderation and Pluralism in Pakistan was the project by The Asia Foundation to involve religious institutions in promoting peace, tolerance, and interfaith harmony amongst the Muslims and non Muslims in Pakistan. The Pluralism Fund, (formerly the Islam and Civil Society Grants Initiative-ICSGI), US funded the project (2003 to 2004).

Communication with Local Communities and Religious Institutions in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was a project implemented with the partial financial support of Democracy Small Grants Program, Embassy of the United States of America, Islamabad. The project aimed at promotion of moderation in the religious communities (September 2001 to March 2002).

Capacity Building of Religious Institutions for Participation in Social Development was funded by the USAID through The Asia Foundation under the Pakistan NGOs Initiative-2 for implementation in four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Project activities focused on capacity building religious institutions in effectively working for up-grading the status of women, promoting females education, family welfare, protection of environment and promotion of religious tolerance in the country. These activities significantly contributed in strengthening the network of moderate Ulama to utilize their strengths in harnessing the fast rising religious extremism and opposition of Ulama to the work of civil society organizations in the country (April 1999 to September 2002).

Capacity Building of Traditional Religious Institutions for Peace, Tolerance and Development was a project implemented in collaboration with University of Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The project focused to further build upon the NRDF’s famous Ulama and Development Model (1993) through research, training, networking and advocacy related activities. NRDF raised local funds for this project (2002).

Awareness Raising of Ulama on Women Rights in Mansehra District was a project funded by Heinrich-Boll-Foundation. A number of orientation workshops, seminars and a survey of Madaris were undertaken and a core group of Ulama was formed to work for women rights. In addition, a booklet on Women Rights in Islam was also developed and published (May1998 to February 1999).

Involving Ulama in Environmental Rehabilitation of Peshawar district was a project funded by International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN), Pakistan. Under this project, a number of workshops, seminars, interactive meetings and a survey of religious Madaris in Peshawar district were undertaken from environmental point of view (January to November, 1998).

Involvement of Ulama in the Development Process in NWFP was a pilot project partially funded by Heinrich-Boll-Foundation. The activities undertaken under the project included, development of a communication strategy for NRDF to address the awareness and communication needs of Ulama in the province; explore ways and means on how to effectively involve them in the development process; to plan and conduct an orientation training workshop for the NRDF team members; organize and facilitate six divisional level orientation workshops for and with Ulama; maintaining close liaison with other training institutions and to write the workshop report (April-Aug. 1997).
