Health of Mothers and Newborns-The involvement of Ulama:

The John Hopkins University Center for Communication Program (JHU-CCP) and NRDF jointly designed Communication, Advocacy and Mobilization (CAM) strategy for this project, in which the services of Ulama were used and proved to be an important and effective communication and community mobilization channel to convey mothers, new-born and child’s health (MNCH) messages to local communities particularly to people who have limited access to print and electronic media.

The project has been evaluated and found to be extremely successful in achieving its objectives (2006 till July 30, 2010).

Health, Relief and Rehabilitation Project for the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) of Bajour and Swat:

NRDF registered over 17000 internally displaced families of Bajawar and Swat in seven union councils of Mardan and motivated local communities to provide food and shelter to IDPs. Later, they were linked up with resourceful organizations and individuals like Mercy Corps, Government of Punjab, Home Office UK, Layton Rahmatoola Benevolent Trust and philanthropists for sustained support. During the process relief goods and cash worth over 170 million rupees were distributed through bank cheques. Medical services and drugs were provided to over 100,000 individuals. Furthermore a regular ambulance service was made available to these needy people for a period of three months (November 2008 to September 2009).

TB Orientation Program to support StopTB Initiative:

NRDF in collaboration with GTZ/STCP and Provincial TB Control Program run a vigorous campaign to control TB in 12 districts of NWFP. 24 capacity building workshops were organized for the religious clerics and later their services were used to provide TB related information on the deadly disease to the local communities. The religious clerics delivered over 800 sermons in their respective jurisdictions (November 2006 June 2007).

  • In collaboration with Catholic Relief Service (CRS) in AMAL implemented a project on HIV/Aids in District Peshawar in 2004.
  • Worked as a resource organization for UNICEF to develop a manual for Ulama on HIV/Aids in 2003.
  • Development and Islam-The need for the Involvement of Religious Sector was a United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) supported project of NRDF. The project resulted in devising a strategy for UNFPA to involve the religious institutions of Ulama, mosques and Madaris in promoting the Mother and Child Health related activities in 10 selected districts of the Pakistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (2003).

Study and Design for Integration of Communicable Diseases Control Program (CDC) at Field and Supervisory Level in NWFP:

A consultancy assignment for Health Department, NWFP to review the services offered by the Health Department for CDC in the province, to enlist the types and number of health workers engaged in these services, to analyze the performance of service provision, to identify their strengths and weaknesses and to recommend to the Health Department a revised version of service/manpower mix and cost effective strategies for CDC with minimum short fall and negative implications. This task was undertaken for the World Bank funded Family Health Project, NWFP (March 1998 to June 1999).

  • In collaboration with GTZ, the NRDF organized a three-day workshop on Islam and Family Planning with the Ulama from Swabi, Peshawar and Mansehra districts (27th February 1999 to 1st March 1999).
  • Conducted a research study on “Views of Rural Religious Leaders on Population programs in NWFP" for Population Welfare Department, Government of NWFP (May-September, 1995).
  • Organized twenty-one free medical camps at Mardan, Swabi and Nowshera districts of NWFP (1993).

Training Need Assessment Survey of Health Staff in the province:

In collaboration with the World bank funded Family Health Project, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province to establish baseline data on health staff training and knowledge; to identify the weaknesses in Primary Health Care (PHC) training, investigate staff preference for the training methodologies; and to assess the level of knowledge of medical and paramedical staff, with particular reference to the job requirement for PHC (March to October 1996).
