Health of Mothers and Newborns - The involvement of Ulama

Location:

Buner, Dir upper, Swat, Peshawar, Charsadda, Mardan, DI Khan, Khanewal, D.G.Khan, Rawalpindi, Jehlum and Vehari

Objectives:

  •  Sensitizing Ulama to the MNH and child health situation and the need to advocate the rights of pregnant women and newborn babies;/li>
  •  Eliciting their support to advocate the importance of MNCH and measures that can be taken by males and others in society to improve the health of women and children
  •  Supporting a forum of Ulama for deliberations on MNH and child health issues.

Activities:

  •  Mapping of Ulama in each of the selected districts in consultation with National Pool of Ulama, and PAIMAN partners in the respective districts.
  •  Quarterly visits of National and local Pool of Ulama to each of the districts to hold individual meetings with the mapped Ulama/Khutiba and to win their support for the MNH and child health related issues.
  •  Constitute five members District Pool in each of the selected district;
  •  Development and dissemination of the MNH and child health booklet to Ulama and Khutiba during visits and meetings.
  •  Organize small group meetings in each of the new districts.
  •  Organize congregations of Ulama at district, provincial and national level
  •  Award prizes and give away to Ulama for encouraging them to regularly disseminate the MNH and child health message through their sermons.
  •  Monitoring of Friday sermons delivered by mapped Ulama for dissemination of key messages on MNH and child health.
  •  Organize quarterly visits for female scholars to deliver Daroos to women in each of the selected districts.
  •  Publish quarterly newsletter and its dissemination to all mapped Ulama and other partner organizations.
  •  Maintain a close liaison with selected Ulama, PAIMAN and its partners in all districts and ensure a frequent communication with them.

Outputs:

  •  Comprehensive mapping exercise was conducted and identified 776 Ulama in 12 selected districts with complete necessary information.
  •  Monthly and quarterly visits of National and Districts Pool of Ulama were conducted and more than 3000 individual meetings were held with the mapped and other Ulama in all of the selected. Their support for the MNH and child health related issues was ensured.
  •  Constituted five members District Pool in each of the selected district. A total of 72 Ulama volunteered to be parts of the groups.
  •  Published a booklet ‘Maa aur Bachay ki sehat mae Ulama din ka Kirdar’ and disseminated it to mapped Ulama and Khutiba during visits and meetings.
  •  Organized 20 small group meetings at the village level in selected districts in which more than 500 Ulama participated.
  •  Organized congregations of Ulama at district level in which more than 2000 Ulama participated.
  •  Organized two grand congregations of Ulama at provincial level in which more than 1500 Ulama participated.
  •  Organized one mega congregation of Ulama at the national level in which more than 600 Ulama participated.
  •  Over 315 award prizes and small souvenirs were given to 2215 Ulama in recognition of their support to the MNH causes.
  •  The Ulama actively took part in the awareness campaign on MNCH and a feedback confirmed that over 1552 Friday sermons were delivered by them. The estimated audience of these sermons is calculated to be over 500,000 individuals.
  •  120 Daroos were delivered by female scholar and more than 600 women participated in these events.
  •  Published quarterly newsletter and distributed it amongst all mapped Ulama and other partner organizations.
  •  Facilitated JHU-CCP in conducting assessment study of the project with an aim to assess the effectiveness of the intervention and to come up with proposals for improvement.
