TB Orientation Program to support Stops Initiative

Location:

Kohistan, Shangla, Swat, Dir Upper, Dir Lower, Buner and Malakand Agency of NWFP

Objectives:

  •  Increasing the awareness in population on TB related issues in selected districts by describing the disease, i.e. its seriousness, its modes of transmission and procedures to cure - DOTS.
  •  Sensitizing the population that TB is a curable and preventable disease so that the suspected population comes forward for voluntary testing and if found smear positive undergo treatment.
  •  Explaining the procedure of access to free of charge services in the diagnostic and treatment centers.
  •  De-stigmatizing particularly the isolation of female population at family and societal levels.
  •  If possible - assessing the feasibility of operating treatment centers from mosques in areas where no health facilities exist.

Activities:

  •  Consultation Meetings with Ulama
  •  Formal Launching of Project and Awards for Ulama
  •  District Level Meetings with Ulama
  •  Capacity building workshops with Ulama
  •  Dissemination of Material
  •  Liaison with Health officials

Outputs:

  •  Over 1100 Ulama were consulted and views were exchanged with them on TB related issues. They assured their support.
  •  District level meeting held. 687 Ulama attended these events.
  •  1000 copies of the booklet on TB and Islam were disseminated amongst Ulam.
  •  Over 270 Ulama, Khutiba, students and teachers of Madaris, official of TB Control Program and staff of GTZ/STCP and NRDF attended the provincial launching ceremony of the project.
  •  24 capacity building workshops were organized for the 560 religious clerics.
  •  Ulama actively supported the elimination of TB and advocacy its causes. They delivered over 800 sermons in support of TB patients and urging local communities to cooperate the
  •  District level meeting held. 687 Ulama attended these events TB Control Program. The estimated audience of these sermons was calculated to be 160,000 individuals.
  •  Ulama increasingly utilized their FM channels to spread the new information they acquired by attending the meetings and participating in the discussion with DTBO’s and NRDF staff. The NRDF on the basis of the following criteria jointly developed by GTZ/STCP, PTBCP and NRDF recommended the names of six Ulama for receiving awards in order to acknowledge their voluntary services to the project.
