Early Recovery Education Services in Crises Affected Areas of FATA

Objectives:

  •  The overall goal of the project is to ensure access of children to quality education services in the militancy and emergency hit areas of South Waziristan and Orakzai agencies of FATA through the active support of Ulama, community elders and their involvement in Education in emergencies (EIE activities).
  •  To provide alternate learning spaces/extended classrooms and necessary educational supplies to children based on rapid survey of damaged schools,
  •  To ensure presence of teachers, especially females in School,
  •  Ensure safety and smooth functioning of schools through the involvement of community, TIJs and Ulama.
  •  To make the school attractive place for children through the introduction of co-curricular activities, tidy classrooms and better WASH facilities involving TIJs / Ulama, parents, teachers and community.
  •  To provide psycho-social support to Students and teachers to overcome their fears and help them concentrate on their studies and games.
  •  Ensure distribution of school supplies to needy and deserving schools and children.
  •  Identify and establish contact with the renowned Ulama in each of the target area and sensitize them on UNICEF initiatives for supporting girls and boy’s education and to create conducive environment for learning, protection of educational facilities and enhancing the quality of education in it.

  •  Organize small group meetings, provincial level congregation and media briefings for Ulama to motivate them to play a leadership role in providing all out support to EIE and other education related programs, Taleemi Islahi Jirga (TIJs) in their respective jurisdictions and facilitate imparting education to the children in the selected agencies.
  •  To mobilize the identified Ulama to effectively communicate awareness raising messages on primary education both for girls and boys to local communities through sermons with an aim to collaborate with School Management Committees for facilitating admission of out of school children in schools.
  •  To network the religious leaders practically involved in creating an enabling environment for education in selected agencies of FATA.

Activities:

  •  Formation of Provincial Core Group
  •  Formation of Agency Core Group of Ulama
  •  Mapping of Ulama/Khutiba
  •  Consultation meetings with Ulama/Khutiba
  •  Conducting Surveys of Out of School and vulnerable Children’s
  •  Damage Assessment of Local School Facilities
  •  Minor Repairs and Rehabilitation of WASH Facilities in 80 Partially Damaged Schools
  •  Provision of Alternate learning Spaces / classrooms of tents / rented places
  •  Distribution of Teaching Learning Material, Recreational Kits and Supplies
  •  Holding 20 Small Group Meetings of Ulama
  •  Organizing one Provincial Congregation of Ulama (500 Ulama)
  •  Monthly Media Briefings
  •  Development and Dissemination of Booklet on Islam and Education (1000 copies)
  •  Advocacy by Ulama in Support of Girls and Boys Education and Ensuring Enrolment of out of School children in Schools.
  •  Acknowledgement of Ulama Contribution for Education through Awards
  •  Psycho-Social Counseling of Students and Teachers
  •  Organizing Health and Hygiene Sessions for Children’s in Schools
  •  Documentation of Success Stories
  •  Networking with Officials of Education Department on Provincial and Local Levels
  •  Organizing Co-Curricular Activities in Schools
  •  Monitor Enrolment of Girls and Boys in Schools
  •  Article in Madaris Newsletter in Support of Education
  •  Monthly Review Workshops
  •  Promotion of Project Activities on Social Network Websites

Outputs:

  •  Provincial Core Group Strengthened through Inclusion of 4 Additional Members
  •  Agency Core Group of Ulama Formed in the Two Tribal Agencies
  •  Mapping of Ulama/Khutiba Completed in both Agencies
  •  Orientation Workshop for Project Staff held
  •  Consultation Meetings with Ulama/Khutiba Initiated
  •  Surveys of Out of School and vulnerable Children’s Initiated
  •  Damage Assessment of School Initiated with the Involving Local Schools, Ulama and Community Leaders

Project Period:

March 1 to December 31, 2011

Collaboration:

UNICEF Pakistan and Department of Education, FATA Secretariat

The overall goal of the project is to ensure access to quality education services to children in the militancy and emergency hit areas of South Waziristan and Orakzai agencies of FATA through the active support of Ulama and their involvement in EIE activities.

The project target is 300 schools in Orakzai and South Waziristan Agency. The total direct beneficiaries are 21,000 children (Roughly 50% being girls). Indirect beneficiaries are the 700 male and female teachers, and nearly 3000 TIJ / Ulama / parents and community members. The specific objectives are to:

  1. To provide alternate learning spaces / extended classrooms and necessary educational supplies to children based on rapid survey of damaged schools
  2. To ensure presence of teachers, especially females,
  3. Ensure safety and smooth functioning of schools through the involvement of community, TIJs and Ulama.
  4. Make the school attractive place for children through the introduction of co-curricular activities, tidy classrooms and better WASH facilities involving TIJs / Ulama, parents, teachers and community.
  5. Children will be provided psycho-social support by the teachers to overcome their fears and help them concentrate on their studies and games.
