Women Empowerment through Learning Opportunities & Democratic Engagement (WELD)

Objectives:

  • Build capacity of local communities for proactive engagement with the democratic process through awareness raising on civil rights, gender equality and empowerment, and monitor effective service delivery of public sector development programs in the districts
  • Enhance social status of women beneficiaries in the household decision making process through provision of life skills training for the well being of family
  • Jointly with district health authorities promote better health and hygiene practices among women and children and provide basic health screening services and necessary referrals
  • Enhance school enrollment among children, particularly girls, through non-formal education services

Activities:

  • In order to enhance the status of women in the decision making process, the Project will provide literacy and life skills training to 600 women. These women will be provided functional literacy, using right base approach that will include gender equality, engagement with the democratic process, right to quality education and health services, and civil rights.
  • The project will create extensive communication consisting of simple message on health and hygiene practices to be followed in homes.
  • Series of orientation meetings will be organized in cultural sensitive manner for the women and children.
  • Minimum basic services for health screening, through medical camps, will be provided to children, women, old people and persons with disability.
  • People requiring additional medical attention will be referred to the district health service providers.
  • All target women and children (direct beneficiaries) will be provided health screening, basic health services and medical referrals.
  • A total of 10,000 women and children will benefit from the activity. 100 hand pumps will be installed to facilitate the access of women to clean drinking water at places where they lack such facilities.
  • Establish 21 Non-formal Education (NFE) Centers for out of school children
  • Equip NFE Centers with necessary items including teacher’s chairs, mates, blackboards, water coolers, first aid box, sports items, teaching aids, attendance/inventory/comment registers
  • Conduct survey of out of school children in NFE centers
  • Enroll 1000 out of school children in the 21 NFE centers
  • Hire 22 NFE teachers to run the centers
  • Impart training to the 22 teachers.
  • Arrange 16 free medical camp for over women 10,000 women and children’s
  • Engage qualified doctors including Pediatrician, Ophthalmologist, Gynecologist and general Practitioners to provide services in these camps
  • Provide free medication to all patients in camps
  • Undertake 20 health and hygiene awareness campaigns for community women
  • Provide sports kits to the youth of the area
  • Provide 300 wheel chairs to the disabled of the area.

Outputs:

  • Mapping of the area conducted and the selected Union Council was divided into eight clusters, keeping in view the project requirements, particularly provision of easy access to out of school children. The activity was completed in consultation with local communities.
  • Key community leaders identified and sensitization meetings were held with them regarding project activities, its components, outputs and the need for their involvement in the planning and implementation of project activities and achieving the overall goal of the project.
  • A total of 40 sensitization meetings were successfully held in each cluster, 20 with male and 20 with female community members and their support gained.
  • Seven trainings workshops were successfully conducted for Community Women Groups (18 to 25 women per group) on civil rights, democracy, proactive citizenship, gender equality and empowerment, district development programmes and functions.
  • Survey Questionnaire developed, pre-tested, modified and subsequently used for conducting baseline survey for out of school children in eight clusters.
  • Orientation workshop arranged for 18 female enumerators, two in pairs, to conduct survey.
  • A total of 1345 out of school children identified through baseline survey.
  • 22 Non Formal Education Centers established for the identified out of school children, (55 percent girls)
  • 24 local female teachers hired and training provided to them on the NFE multi grade system including record keeping, class management, child psychology, lesson plan development, assessment system, and child rights.
  • A grand inauguration ceremony of 22 NFE Centers carried out where 1875 people including local community members, education and health officials participated in the event.
  • Two Sensitization workshops conducted for District Education Department Mardan on NFE intervention and their support solicited.
  • Health check up for 1000 NFE children organized and successfully conducted in 22 NFE Centers
  • Twelve Literacy Teachers (local female) hired and training provided to them on functional literacy [numeracy, reading, writing] and life skills training including conflict management, leadership skills, and communication
  • Eight Functional Literacy and Life Skills Training Centers established, one in each cluster of selected Union Council.
  • 600 community women identified and enrolled in eight Functional Literacy and Life Skills Centers
  • Leaflets of basic health and hygiene messages prepared, shared with Executive Health Officer (EDO), District Mardan and UNICEF
  • Three health awareness campaigns (three days each campaign) in consultation with district health authorities were successfully carried out in various clusters where health, sanitation and hygiene messages were conveyed to raise the health awareness level of local communities
  • Awareness created among target community to adopt health and hygiene practices
  • Three health screening of women and children through medical camps conducted (one in each of the three clusters)
  • A total of 1000 patients were provided free medical facility, i.e. consultation, treatment, medicines, diagnostic and referral of community members in the target area.
  • Medical services provided during the three medical camps included a full patient consultation, basic physical examination, blood pressure (B/P), blood sugar level (BSL) and diagnostic facilities such as screening for diabetes with finger prick tests for patients over 40 years.

NRDF in collaboration with Foundation for the Future (Jordan) has currently launched a project entitled Women Empowerment though Learning Opportunities and Democratic Engagement (WELD) in District Mardan. The objective of the project is to:

  1. Build capacity of local communities for proactive engagement with the democratic process through awareness raising on civil rights, gender equality and empowerment, and monitor effective service delivery of public sector development programs in the districts;
  2. Enhance social status of women beneficiaries in the household decision making process through provision of life skills training for the well being of family;
  3. Jointly with district health authorities promote better health and hygiene practices among women and children and provide basic health screening services and necessary referrals and
  4. Enhance school enrollment among children, particularly girls, through non-formal education services (June 2010 to July 2010).

Under the Project, 22 non-formal schools and literacy centers have been established in district Mardan. Moreover, free medical camps were established after every alternative month where free medical services are provided, including a free patient consultation, basic physical examination, blood pressure (B/P), blood sugar level (BSL) and diagnostic facilities, such as screening for diabetes with finger prick tests for patients over 40 years.
